It's a toss up between Neal Asher's The Skinner and Raymond E Feist's Magician. Skinner has some of the most entertaining and real characters I've ever found in sci-fi, and my copy of Magician is a very very old first edition that belonged to my father… it might have its faults as a fantasy epic, but it reminds me of being a child and wanting to have adventures so much I can't help but fall in love all over again each time I open it. One day soon I'll pass it on to another young lad so it can become his adventure too – every boy should have one that good.
Same question, 'casue this one is a goodie!

Favorite Single Book- Firelord by Parke Godwin. It is a historical retelling of King Arthur and has the most melodic yet accesible language I've read. It's prose that is not pretentious and is still welcoming to people. Very influential on my work.
Favorite Book Series- The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson. This is where I learned that no matter how small a character seems, there is always meaning to them and that meaning can surface at any time. That and the power of internal struggle and how it takes a large number of fantasy conventions and turns them on their head. (The primary one being the cost of violence on the people who commit the violence. No matter the good of their reason. Yeah that's another thing that crops up in my work…)
Let it roll!

Favorite book… this is a tough one for me, but I'd have to say it's Ursula K LeGuin's first book in her Earthsea Cycle series, "A Wizard of Earthsea". As a teen it introduced me to a number of the key concepts by which I now guide myself, and was a fantastic education in not only the price but the responsibility that power engenders.
As for a book series, I hear you re: Covenant, DRod, but I'd have to say my current favorite is Jim Butcher's "The Dresden Files". After reading the series through once or twice, you realize that both the author and the titular character are growing, which is just plain cool in my book. (*drumroll*, *ksssh*) (oh, and if you saw the abomination that Syfy released by the same title, burn it from your memory – it bears about as much similarity to the books as Congress' current nature does to our founding fathers' intent)
Edit: Oh, duh, once again, please!

Favorite book: The Andromeda Strain, my first exposure to late writer Michael Crichton. I always will remember the one quote in that book:
"Biology, the retarded child. . . . Even in the time of Newton and Galileo, men knew more about the moon and other heavenly bodies than they did about their own."

i'm almost ashamed to admit this, but one of my favorite series of books has to be Mercedes Lackey's Heralds of Valdemar series. i've read and reread them, done (bad) artwork of the characters, and even DM'd a PnP RPG set in that world setting (using the palladium fantasy roleplay system)
I never really had a "Favorite" book though… most of the books that i love are part of a trilogy, series, or other things. On Basilisk Station by David Weber strikes a cord with me. The main character, the book universe, even the tech involved in the setting all seem to work well together.
Same question!

Favorite series is a hard one, but I'm largely leaning toward David Weber's Honor Harrington series and John Ringo's Posleen War / Legacy of the Aldenata series.
Favorite single book is, alas, impossible to decide. However, I would like to give Scott Adams' God's Debris high marks for uniqueness of role.
Same question…

Hmm I guess I should answer my own question now. For fave series I'm in a bit of a split. Honor Harrington (I like Nimitz), S.M. Stirling's Changed series, and the Mercy Thompson series. Goddess I haven't read The Unbeliever trilogies in ages.
Favorite Single book… The Stand most definately.
keep on keeping on children.
Edit: And yes Forsythe Sci-fi took a good idea and screwed it up. If it was either closer to the books, or perhaps not supposedly directly based on the books, Like say have Karrin as the main charecter and how she deals with Dresden,it would've been a decent, not great like say Sancturary or the Stargates, but decent series.

Ok, it's been a quiet couple of days, so I'll start the ball again with two exceptionally random questions that are potentially vital to understanding you all as human beings
1) What candy do you go gaga for?
2) What is your favorite Western and why?
For me, you cannot find an equal to a peanut butter cup. Even sex pales in comparison… ok, maybe everything but sex.
And as far as gunslinging action in the Old West, I think no movie will ever touch the dark, brutal mystery that is High Plains Drifter. If you think you've seen Clint Eastwood and you've not seen this movie, you haven't. It's an ugly, nasty movie, and one that's about as odd as a western can get without grafting weird stuff in like monsters and aliens… almost creepy.
Now, give me your answers! I must know!

Favorite candy: Twix Bars. Something about caramel, chocolate and cookies that just mixes perfectly.
And favorite Western: Unforgiven. The one lines says it all for me:
- Little Bill : You, sir, are a cowardly son of a bitch! You just shot an unarmed man.
- Will Munny: Well he should have armed himself if he's gonna decorate his saloon with my friend.
Same Q.

I know what you mean aboutthe Peanut Butter Cups… they are like little chocolate covered treasure chests full of goodness.
Favorite Western? it is and will most likely be Tombstone… If only for Val Kilmers performance as Doc Holliday
Doc Holliday: Nonsense, I have not yet begun to defile myself

Candy: anything with dark chocolate- the higher the cacao, the better. Bonus if it's got good dried cherries in it.
Western… Does Blazing Saddles count?

I probably screwed it up but :"You have to remember, these people are the salt of the earth, the common clay. You know, morons."
"I want rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, shit-kickers and Methodists". "Could you repeat that, sir?"
as for the candy…lemonheads! drop a couple into a bottle of Coke and YUM.
Western: Tombstone if Blazing Saddles doesn't count.

Candy: Ohmygoodness, I LOVE me some candy. The type depends on my mood and the day. Some days, there's nothing better than downing a roll of SweetTarts. Some days, sour gummy worms are where it's at. After everyone talking about peanut butter cups, I just grabbed a handful out of my candy basket, and they are the best thing ever.
I have a bit of a sweet tooth. . . .
As for favorite Western, I'm really not a fan of the John Wayne/Clint Eastwood style westerns. I do LOVE the movie "Maverick", though I don't know if it counts. It has gun fights and saloon girls, and con men. . . I say it counts!
Once more, with feeling!

I saw the bold "Little Bill" before the rest of the post, and immediately thought of Bill Cosby's cartoon character. I was wondering why that small bald child was being so vulgar…
Candy…though I've tried to lay off it of late (he said having bought several Cadbury Eggs and chocolate-covered peeps…and a PB-filled white chocolate bunny), there are plenty to enjoy. Just for the sake of argument, I'll say the Hersey's S'mores bars. I don't think they have'em at the store anymore, but they were goooood…
And to be honest, I have no problem with Westerns, they're just not my cup of tea. But I'll go ahead and say Tombstone.
