Heh…  A dress with an actual front… and an actual back… and an actual skirt…  If it doesn't cover her undergarments while she's not even bending over, it's meant for a shorter girl.  If you've seen the dress that Taylor Swift wore at the end of the "You Belong With Me" video, that style of dress would suit Becka quite well.  Preferably in a nice sapphire or lapis; a deep bright blue, matching either her eyes or that choker she's currently wearing.

And from what I've seen of that style of dress in real life, it does as poor a job of showing off the wearer's figure as it does of covering her skin.

That and she really needs something that can cover the scar on her back… a simple sapphire or black sheath style dress would be my opinion.

Actually a ribbon choker would be an appropriate accessory if the neckline she ends up with is still on the low side.  However, she might find a regular necklace more appropriate, especially if she can get a pendant custom made.  (If grandma really is footing the bill, that's within reach.)  Alternatively, glass beads are relatively cheap, and can be surprisingly pretty.  A "string of pearls" in a deep blue would probably look ravishing on her.

Not really a spoiler, but more detail than most people will want unless you craft as a hobby:

A sequence of 8mm spherical opaque glass beads alternated with ~2mm "#11″ seed beads (the differing sizes give it more flexibility) on a clear or dark blue monofilament strand (or four-to-six strands of heavy-guage sewing thread, if she's not going to wear it often), and crimp the ends into loops to attach a simple silver-plated toggle or box clasp.  She could make it herself for under $15 including both components and shipping, depending on the clasp, and another $10-15 ($20 at most) in tools (small bead crimper which doubles as a pair of small-nose pliers, and a second pair of small-nose pliers).  She should coil it around her hand before setting the crimp / knot on the second end, to put as much slack into it as possible.  (If she doesn't have that slack, the ends will snap later on if it does get coiled tight somehow.)  The smaller beads between the larger ones will hide the extra slack when it's uncoiled.  (Yes, I know what I'm talking about.  I made the bridal party necklaces for my brother's wedding.  And earrings.)

In that situation, I would probably say, "There's a neckline?"

Yeah…actually, my brother briefly turned on "Jersey Shore" last night (before turning on one of his many DVDs), and one of the girls wore a top in much the style of Becka's. It was not flattering, even given her bustline and my heterosexuality. In fact, I wanted to burn myself a little after watching.

With my 100th post, I'd like to applaude the "Oompa Loompa tan" crack. Bravo. Bra-vo (whoa, unintentional pun, given the page. Must remember to use it at the Cheezeburger…).

There will be on the dress she's going to get…  And if she can't get it there, I expect both Macy's and JC Penny carry eveningwear.  If not, since Moira's been charging her purchases so far, I'd imagine she has the resources to either rent (or hire) a car and take a day trip into Boston, or find a dressmaker in Boston online and pay her to come out to Innsmouth.

Or…

She can drop somewhere between $150 and $300 on a dressmaker's mannequin (the higher the price, the more adjustability and/or durability), another $300-500 on a sewing machine, buy some surprisingly nice fabric from Wal*Mart or Joann's or any more than a thousand other retailers of whole cloth textiles for less than $5 a square yard, dress patterns from Wal*Mart for under $20 each, and make something she likes herself.  After the first three or four, she'll start being able to turn out some fairly nice outfits fairly rapidly.

Assuming she won't be able to make a living fighting monsters or survive on an inheritance that somehow never materialized for Charon, (Becka and Lindsey) could probably make a respectable living making custom prom dress and formal evening gowns.  (You'd be surprised how hard it is to find a decent dress shop that sells more than just off-the-rack with minimal tailoring.)

I know nothing about dresses and clothes manufacturing in general. I did almost fail the tailoring portion of my 8th grade Family and Consumer Sciences class, after all. It wasn't hard, I just wasn't good at it. I was much better at the cooking and nutrition portion. That said, even I can tell when clothes work and when they don't, and that dress, if you want to call it that, does not work on Becka. Forgive me for being a guy, but I daresay I wouldn't mind seeing Charon in something like that. *Braces for thrown objects*

Preaching to the choir, man- impossible to find, outside big cities.  This goes double if you've got unusual measurements.  I've actually done the make-your-own thing before!  Recently!

Even in or near a major city, you still find places that are… problematic.  My folks live within 10 miles of the NYC city limits, and that part of Long Island is high-density suburban.  When my mom needed an outfit for my brother's wedding, the first place my folks went came back with a different dress from the one she'd ordered, and insisted it was the same one.  My dad then asked the owner of the shop where he gets his suits for a recommendation on where to go instead, and was referred to the place where mom was able to get an outfit she liked.  The catch was that by that point everything was down to the wire, so a single muck-up would have be catastrophic.  Fortunately that time everything came out exactly as it should have.  The only remaining complication was that we didn't have a fabric sample against which to color-match the beads to make mom's necklace and earrings.

I have a number of friends who participate in fantasy LARPs and SCA.  They construct on average 95% or more of their own costumes, and about half build their own gear for non-SCA combat (SCA uses rattan, rather than boffer).  The other half buy their gear from the first half.

Remember when people thought that if matter came into physical contact with anti-matter, there'd be a huge cataclysmic explosion?

Yeah, I think that's what would happen if Moira ever stepped foot into a Wal*Mart.

From a single cell no less and probably take the earth with her.  Does the shadowchild know any instant teleportation moves?

What!?  You guys were talking about dresses, this is something I know about!

And I'll form the head!
