Where's all the roleplayers!?  Still haunting the old forums I take it!

An open mind is like a fortress with it's gates unbarred and unguarded.

I'd love to join in when things get going if I may. :) Any chance I can a primer of sorts on how you guys make this work, etc, in the meantime?

By all means!  :)   I've heard that the game mechanics (ie: the rules) are likely going to change, so there's little point in going over those in much detail, but generally speaking our posts are conversational in format, and are optionally woven in/around any actions taken.

eg: Oh, sh*t, cops are on my tail and I've got the EOD's Eye of Blood in the trunk! Gonna try and shake them, hold on folks! DooDah executes a series of rapid-fire turns and blind turns down alleys, to no large avail, as a helicopter draws near and paints her vehicle with a spotlight. D*mn, I can't do squat against a chopper!  Anyone have any ideas?

Of late we seem to have settled upon using green to denote "actions", though the rest of the colors are still somewhat up in the air and are thus context-specific.  So as to not confuse you, Hera has the in-game ability to telepathically speak with certain others (mostly our shapeshifters, I think, to give them a voice when they have no human voicebox) and then the color there has generally been blue.

As for the rest, I can only really speak for myself, but I appreciate players who can write well and who have a grasp of actions vs. reactions.  For example, tossing grenades down main street will get the SWAT team on your butt PDQ even if you did it because a face-eating monstrosity needed to be put down.  Perhaps the shopkeepers wouldn't call the cops, appreciating your bravery, but the folks down the street that only heard a very loud *BANG* just might.

Lastly, we've gone from a player-driven focus to a moderator-driven focus, with missions led and GM'd by the player(s) that submitted them; how things will play out with the migration to the new forums has yet to be seen.

So, yeah, please do partake!  We need new blood, so to speak. ;)   (and everyone else, please do chip in – I know I've hardly scratched the surface here ;) )

I tried it way back in the day, and was considering trying agian, but the lack of structure was killing me. I've spent to long with my fancy books to be comfortable going freeform.

It's time for another good idea, bad idea:
Good Idea – Getting your Insider character into the comic
Bad Idea – Joining the EOD to do so.

Gratz to Jacobus for the New Avatar!

*shrug* I suppose it wasn't for everyone, but I personally enjoyed the freeform nature and treated it more like a collaborative writing experiment than a game, per se.  That was… rather awhile ago though (back in the Alpha days), so it's kinda a moot point, neh?

Ah yes, my evil plan is already bearing fruit.  I thought we might be able to con… er interest people into playing with us if we just had a thread ;)

Even when we had the "stats" It was more of "type it out" than  "do this, then check that, then your results are…" Also, the Post like you're posting to a forum disallowed things like the green text you used.

Sigh.  I miss those days of Alpha.  Things were so much . . . simpler, and in some ways, more fun.  Until it got entirely out of hand.  Oh, well, ce' la vie.

For what it's worth, I never really have gotten out of that style, but then, my situation is a little different than most, so shrug.

Yes and no… in Beta it depended entirely upon the context.  For example, with opposed actions where both parties have invested points in a related skill (eg: combat), the GM ruled who succeeded.  As to your latter point, I must admit myself mystified; I did say "of late", so why reference that such wasn't possible in Alpha?

And you're not alone in that, Inara – I still dream of those days sometimes (figuratively and literally).

Kudos, Tain. ;)

Thanks for the primer :) I've done plenty of tabletop RPing and do some forum-based RP with friends as well, so I'm quite used to freeform, stats-lite, mod- or player-driven action in such forms.

A background on what the 'setting' is for the particular group would be helpful…obviously the Shadowgirls world, but is it set in Innsmouth? What association has brought the characters together exactly, and who they are, etc. It wouldn't help much if I joined in with some idea of a character who was completely wrong for the RP after all. :)

Ahhh, I getcha now – we've mostly been in and about Innsmouth, but the game has ranged across the country on occasion, for variety's sake as much as anything.  Some Insiders have had traumatically "weird" experiences that drew them in and others just came wandering along, but the one unifier is that all Insiders were brought together (directly or subtly) by the mysterious woman who calls herself Fides.  Little is known of her, except for her impressively movie-fu hacking skills; she "owns" the board security-wise, IC.

I suspect you have, but just in case, you've read The Shadow over Innsmouth, right?  Oh, and you'd have to read the Alpha archives to know it, but unless you want fishyfolk or EOD showing up at your door, never post IC the words "Dagon" or "Cthulh*()!)&(^!&*^=Fhg}}|hgyuaa

Welp, I'd suggest you give it a read all the same, it really sets the tone for our damp, dank, paranoid little tale, but it's your call; you can read it free here, fwiw. ;)

As for the Alpha archives, it's a little buggy these days and doesn't seem to ask for an id/pwd any longer (used to be VISION/CLARITY iirc, all in caps), but here's the link.

As I said though, it's buggy – every link has "/wordpress/" in it that will get you a 404; just edit that out and re-submit the edited link after you 404, and you should get the page you want.

As Fors was so kind to point out, not all of the characters are in or around Innsmouth.  Inara owns a little farm* in the middle of nowhere in Kansas.  It's about as far from sea creatures as you can get, so it serves as a "safe house" most of the time.  It's also a great place to dump your character if your real life gets in the way of playing for a couple of days/weeks.  I generally post updates every so often, with notes as to who is currently hanging out at the Farm.  It also has a firing range for learning how to use weapons, etc., and Inara's fiance', Michael, will train you, if need be.  There are also two families currently living on the premises, plus Inara, Michael, and their two children, Charlie and Joshua.

And, yeah, I tend to ramble, so get used to it. :)

*"Little farm" meaning 40ish acres. :)

Didn't want to put words in your mouth, so I kept it vague.  ;)   You still keeping your pilot friend? (Sue, iirc?)

Yeah.  She's far too useful to give up.  And yeah, her name is Sue. :)

I think in the next Re-boot, we should make Sue a big burly guy, a la Wild Bill of (the occasionally NSFW) http://www.licd.com.  So am I right in thinking that this will likely be a DC-style event, where everyone is pretty much the same, but little things have been changed and tweeked to match the now?
