D.Rey here. And here’s part two of the four part crossover with Rival Angels.
I saw Avatar yesterday… It’s um… Well, let me just say this is my opinion and my opinion only. Don’t hold this against D.Rod.
It’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
It’s really pretty and it does deserve it’s accolades of being a revolutionary film in the area of visual effect. However, I found the plot insipid, the acting horrible, and the first hour of it could have been shaved off. It is exactly how I felt after seeing Revenge of the Fallen… Except I didn’t feel talked down to by Bumblebee at the end of that one. (Of course he can’t talk, but that’s besides the point. But hey, call me a capitalist… I rather like industry.)
Now I have to say though, I cannot emphasize this enough, Avatar’s effects are amazing, and if that’s what you’re looking for, the movie’s got them in spades. Seriously, after about three minutes, I forgot that Neytiri was a CGI character. (She was more real than the human actors to be honest.) The action in the last hour of the movie is mind blowing and I can imagine that it would have been better in 3D. (I saw the 2D version as 3D gets me sick.) It’s a definite lock for the Visual Effects Oscar next March, and I’m sure the themes of the movie will resonate with the academy to make it a contender for Best Picture. (For whatever the hell that’s worth these days.) But much like RotF did being a Michael Bay film, Avatar suffers from the same problems that all James Cameron films have. (Seriously… Unobtanium? Really? Was upsidaisium taken?)
In the end, it just depends on what you’re looking for in a movie. Both Avatar and RotF have their merits and they both have their faults. Both movies are visually wonderful roller coaster rides and they’re worth seeing… But they are not great movies. One movie comes across to me as thinking it’s more important than it really is. The other has Devastator’s testicles. It’s almost the “high brow” vs “low brow” version of the same movie. Your mileage may vary.
I’m a redneck. I’m goin’ with roboballs.
Have a Happy New Year folks and we’ll see you again on Friday in 2010.
Well, I hope you all have a good holiday season. D.Rod’s out of town visiting family this week, so that means I get to cover the updates. And updates we will have! (Don’t worry, no anti-global warming rants from me this year. I’m too cold to complain.
) Starting this week is the start of our fun four part crossover with Rival Angels, written and drawn by Alan Evans, RA’s creator.
Enjoy and see you Wednesday!
